The VI peel is almost painless and has very few complications and hazards, yet produces dramatic visible results in just days with little downtime. You will feel a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds which subsides completely almost immediately. The peel is applied topically, numbing of the skin takes place after the first pass. Some patients may feel more comfortable using a fan or cold air breeze.
Normal activities can be resumed immediately after the peel. It takes about four days after you finish peeling for the skin to return to its normal PH and to see the final effects. The skin will look luminous and glowing. Hyper-pigmentation will be improved or gone, depending on the amount of damage. Tone and texture will be improved with an overall more youthful appearance.
The skin peeling associated with the Vi Peel is a light, fluffy peel that will start on day three and generally be finished by the end of day four. The peeling is easily hidden by moisturizer. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible. The peel can be modulated to produce a deeper, more aggressive peel, if necessary, depending on your skin condition.
The skin will look slightly tan, yellow or red immediately after the peel. On days one and two the skin will feel slightly tighter, with no visible signs of having had a peel. Any pigmented areas might appear slightly darker. On approximately day three, you will begin to peel. The first signs of peeling usually begin around the mouth area and continue for a day or two. With the use of the Vi Derm™ moisturizer, you may go about your usual daily routine. By day six or day seven you will be done peeling and the results are dramatic! If a more aggressive peel was performed, a secondary peel might occur around day seven.
Like everything else, skin needs maintenance. The Vi Peel's results will last as long as skin care is maintained, direct sun exposure is avoided and preventive aging with the Vi Peel is performed three or four times per year. Peel Procedure: The skin is first cleansed with a mild alcohol and acetone mixture to remove all surface oils and better penetration on the peel. The first layer is applied which slightly numbs the skin. You may feel brief stinging for 5 to 10 seconds. Subsequent layers are applied until the skin "frosts". The peel is left on and will self-neutralize over the next 4-6 hours. The skin will feel and look tighter with a healthy glow. Mineral makeup may be applied the next morning after the peel.
After the second day the skin will have a slightly tan or red appearance. Over the next two days the skin will feel slightly tighter and look tanned. Pigmented spots and freckles may become darker. At the end of day three the skin will begin to peel. The skin peeling in most cases is a light fluffy peel. The first signs of peeling will be noted in the most sensitive areas around the mouth and corner of the eyes. Use of the Vi Derm moisturizer and SPF is very important to facilitate healing and provide protection to brand new skin.
Do not peel loose skin. It may cause scarring. After skin stops peeling (6-8 days) continue with usual daily skincare routine. Your new skin will be much smoother, clearer and with more even tone. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible with mild flaking and generally will be finished by day six or seven with substantial results. The peel may be repeated as often as every two weeks, if necessary, for damaged skin.

Significant complications with medical chemical peels are infrequent, but may include:
Scarring and/or infection
Temporary or permanent changes in skin or uneven tone (especially with Phenol peels). These include: Hyperpigmentation (a darkening of the skin, treatable in most cases with current bleaching techniques) and Hypopigmentation (a lightening of the skin, more difficult to treat)
Cold sore breakouts in patients who have a history of recurring blisters and cold sores, like herpes and shingles. (An anti - viral medication before and after the procedure can help to prevent this).
Risks for those with a family history of heart disease (Phenol peel only).
IMPORTANT CONTRAINDICATIONS of CHEMICAL PEELS
You should NOT have a chemical peel if you:
Continue to have excessive sun exposure
Have active Herpes Simplex, Warts, history of Keloidal scarring
Underwent any type of recent facial surgical procedures or injectables
Used Accutane in the last year (which increases your chances of excessive scarring) or on an active high dose B5 supplement
Pregnant or Lactating
Have any auto immune diseases
Have had any recent radioactive or Chemotherapy treatments
Have sunburn, windburn or broken skin or have recently waxed or have recently used a depilatory such as Nair or use Vaniqua.
Have had recent waxing or threading or other chemical peels
Post Vi-Peel Instructions
Day 1. The ViPeel solution is left on the skin and you will be given a post peel kit to take home that contains hydrocortizone and SPF. Nothing is to be applied to the area treated on day one (no SPF, makeup or moisturizer of any kind except the one supplied). The peel must be the only thing on your skin for proper penetration of the peel. Make sure you leave the ViPeel solution on for at least 6 hours. You must stay out of the sun.
Night of Day 1. Wash the peel off one hour before bedtime with gentle cleanser and apply the supplied towelette, from the take home kit (Retin A/Vitamin C) into the skin and do not rinse. Moisturizer with hydrocortisone may be applied if the skin feels uncomfortable or itchy.
Day 2. The following morning wash with gentle cleanser, soothing toner, apply hydrocortisone 1%, and then apply the provided SPF 55. Your Jane Iredale Mineral makeup may be applied at this time. You will reapply the hydrocortisone and SPF at least three times throughout the day or when the skin feels tight, dry, itchy or uncomfortable.
Night of Day 2. That second night one hour before bedtime wash with gentle cleanser and apply the second Retine A/Vitamin C towelette followed by hydrocortizone and/or calming moisturizer.
Day 3. Is the day you will generally begin to peel or flake. Continue the same steps as morning two (gentle wash, apply the hydrocortisone and SPF 55). You must re-apply these three times daily or as needed. Do not let the skin dry out. It interferes with the healing process. Upon the start of peeling, you may incorporate a thicker moisturizer with the hydrocortisone and SPF regimen (hydrocortisone, moisturizer, then SPF). (NOTE: Moisturizer should be used once the peel process has begun).
Day 3 - Day 7. You may reapply Hydrocortisone, Moisturizer (upon peeling), and SPF 55 three times a day throughout the entire peeling process.
Continued Sun Protection. Protect your skin with SPF 45 or higher to prevent further pigmentation.
Stay out of the direct sun during the peel process..
Do not work out or sweat excessively for the first three days. Keep skin cool!
Do not pick or pull peeling skin.
